Tournament Structure for the Coppa Italia
The Coppa Italia is fairly unique, since the draw for the entire competition takes place before a ball is kicked. Teams from Italy’s top-three tiers are involved, although just four teams from Serie C are part of the 44 contenders eveಌry season.
With the competition kicking off early in the campaign, the preliminary round consists of four Serie C clubs and four of the lowest-ranked Serie B sides.
The remaining Serie B sides enter in the first round, joined by the 12 lowest-ranked Serie A clubs.
💯 The remaining 8 highest-ranked Serie A sides (typically those competing in Europe) do not join the Ital♛ian Cup until the round of 16 (third round) stage.
The round of 16 and quarter-final matches are played in quick succession in the new year, as is the first leg of both semi-final ties. The second legs are pl꧃ayed a couple of months later, generally in April, with the awaited final taking place in May.
