What Is Each-Way Betting?
Each-way be🐻tting ensures that, even if your horse doesn't win the race outright (which, let's face it, tends to happen), you'll still win something if it finishes se⛄cond, third, or even fourth.
An each-way bet (also referred to as E/W for short) consists of two equal-sized wagers: a ‘win bet' and a ‘place bet'. This means that if you stake £1, you will be placing two separate bets of 50p each: one on the horse to win, and🍌 one on the horse to place.
-
If your pick wins🔥 the race, both parts of the b🌌et are paid out.
-
If the horse finishes in one of the top places, only the place part of your wager is paid out, typically at a fraction of the win odds✅.
-
However, should the ho﷽rse fail to win or place, the bet loses.
A ‘place' refers to the number of places a bookmaker will pay out if the horse does not win. For example, if the operator decides to pay out the first four spots, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the race are considered ‘places'.
The odds for a ‘place' are often set at a fraction of the winning odds. Suppose you bet on a horse to win each-way at 12/1. Here you can see what the final odds are, depending on what fraction the bookmaker offers.
-
Each-way 1/2: This means that you win half your stake if a ‘horse is placed', so the odds are 6/1.
-
Each-way 1/3: If your horse is ‘placed', you win a third of the original odds, i.e. 4/1.
-
Each-way 1/4: Your placed horꦍse wins a quarter of the pre-determined odds, i.e. 3/1.
The finishing places available vary depending o🎐n the bookmaker, the most common being three places. This means that if your horse finishes in the top three places, you win whatever fraction is offered.
The below image shows what typical each-way bets may look like. As you ma🧜y have noticed, this offer pays out the first 5 places at ⅕ of the or🧜iginal odds.
Therefore, each-way bets essentially give you two chances: one for the horse to win, and one for the horse to place. To learn more, check out our in-depth each-way betting guide.

2023 Grand National Each-Way Place Offerings
The Grand National is one of the biggest events of the UK horse racing calendar, capturing the attention of the entire country on the third Saturday every April – even your nan will know about it and might fancy a flutter!
So far, the offer is rather meagre, with only a few bookmakers offering more than the relatively standard 1/4 each-way places. But don't worry – this is likely to change over time, as the bookmakers update their each-way conditions shortly before the day of the Grand National.
Each-way bets make up 74% of all bets on the Grand National, a tre🦋nd expected to continue for 2023.
Each-Way Betting in the Grand National
The Grand National features a lot more horses than a usual race. Usually, the leading jumps races will feature around 10 horses that compete for a major ho𒈔nour; although for events over longer distances, the field can expand to 20 ♔or even 25.
However, the Grand National takes scale to a huge level, with 40 horses competing at Aintree Racecourse. Due to the sheer amount of horses participating, picking a winner can be a very tougꦚh task indeed.
This is why leading betting sites offer compelling odds for even the top horses to win the event, in acknowledgement of the difficulty of predicting an outright winner. It is also why betting sites usually offer each-way payouts on Grand National places up to six, depending on the bookmaker in question. This𒊎 significantly increases your cha𒀰nces of success.
Always compare and contrast the odds offered by the top Grand National betting sites. A portion of them may offer a 1/4 of the price of the initial odds, whi⭕le others might provide 1/5. The latter value is common across the industry, although the best operators will attempt to increase the value you receive on a payout by offering 1/4 of the outright price.
For example, if a horse is backed at 10/1 and places within the set parameter of the bookmaker who offers a 1/4 of the price for an each-way bet, you will receive odds of 2.5/1. A £10 each-way bet would earn you a return of £2.50 plus your stake (£5 x 2.50 = £12.50). If the betting site was offering only a 1/5 of the odds, this would only get you your stake back from a £10 bet. Therefore, finding that premium value on the Grand National is key. You can use our each-way calculator to work out the🍸 trickier sums rega🅺rding your each-way bets.
When it comes to choosing between a ꦡlarge number of places or smaller fractions꧃ of odds, there is no right or wrong answer. If you want to bet on a lesser favourite, it may be safer to find a bookmaker that offers more places. On the other hand, if you're sure that a horse will win, a smaller fraction might be better as you'll get a better return in case of the unthinkable.
How Many Places Is Each Betting Site Offering?
In our table at the beginning of this article, we've listed all the leading UK online book🎃makers along with the number of places they🍌 are paying out on for this year's Grand National, along with the place terms.
Don't forget – if you're yet to have joined any of the above-listed bookmakers, then the likelihood is you can also claim some betting offers.
